Official Telegram form of Canadian National Telegraphs, sent from SS Marine Carp to Montreal, (it concerns members of the Chandris Greek shipping family), dated “1948 JAN 25”. Sender George Candris [Chandris]. VF and Scarce
• The SS Marine Carp was a prominent American C4-class troop transport ship heavily associated with Greek post-WWII history, though it was not owned by the famous Greek shipping line, Chandris Lines. Because it brought thousands of Greek immigrants and displaced citizens from Piraeus to New York in the late 1940s, it is frequently discussed in maritime history circles alongside Greek companies like Chandris. In 1946, the United States Maritime Commission chartered the ship to American Export Lines. It was immediately put to work on a post-war Mediterranean route. Between 1946 and 1949, the ship served as a primary lifeline for thousands of Greek refugees, war brides, and displaced citizens fleeing the aftermath of WWII and the Greek Civil War, sailing from Piraeus to Ellis Island/New York.
• The Chandris name (often spelled Candris in automated transcriptions).
