Commercial letter from Anthis Stringos, Piraeus, to J. Riedl in Wiesbaden, posted on 3 June 1940. The 8-drachma King George II definitive paid the UPU foreign-letter rate; the
additional 1-drachma Social Welfare stamp represented the compulsory postal tax and did not contribute to postage. Both were cancelled by the Piraeus machine cancellation with a patriotic slogan. The black circular German marking, incorporating the Reich eagle and swastika, records wartime postal examination on arrival. Dispatched while Greece remained neutral, only seven days before Italy entered the war, the cover illustrates civilian commercial communication under rapidly tightening European controls.
