Rhodes 1909: RHODES TURQUIE D'ASIE 19.JUIN.09 (Ρόδος, French Levant P.O.) tying a 10c Semeuse on picture postcard addressed to Cap St. Jacques (nowadays Vũng Tàu), near Saigon, Cochinchine, via ALEXANDRIE EGYPTE 22.JUIN.09, ALEXANDRIA G 22.VI.09, SUEZ 23.JUIN.09 and LIGNE N PAQ.FR.No 6 26.JUIN.09, RR & G-F -postage stamp damaged
Recipient: a French Caporal in the 11e Colonial, Cap St. Jacques, near Saigon (Saigon’s permanent coastal defence garrison).
The card travelled on a French ship from Rhodes to Alexandria, but then had to be forwarded by the Egyptian postal service from Alexandria to Suez, where it joined the French Marseille–Yokohama line (Ligne N), which called only at Port Said and Suez, not Alexandria.
Unusual use of a French metropolitan stamp instead of a French Levant issue
Picture postcard: RHODES Intérieur de la forteresse / ΡΟΔΟΣ [Εσωτερικό του Φρουρίου - παλιά πόλη]
