Letter from Athens ( 23 7 24) to Cairo, Egypt, franked with a horizontal pair of the 1-drachma blue Hermes definitive, totalling 2 drachmas. The franking correctly paid the UPU foreign-letter rate for the first 20 grams, effective from 1 January 1923 until 31 December 1924. The stamps were cancelled by an Athens machine postmark incorporating a Greek-language postal publicity slogan, while the address is written in French, then the principal international postal language. An attractive commercial use illustrating the sharp post-war increase in Greek overseas letter rates.
