Rethymnon (Crete, Ottoman Empire):
ΡΕΘΥΜΝΟΝ 5.ΙΟΥ?.83 (type II) canceling a 5λ Large Hermes on cream paper (with control number), R & F-VF
The Greek postal offices in the Ottoman Empire closed in 1881. However, the ΡΕΘΥΜΝΟΝ (Rethymnon) postmark can still be found after 1881. It is widely believed that the postal office operated within the offices of the Hellenic Steamship Agency, which continued to serve correspondents by affixing Greek postage stamps and canceling them with the Greek postal seal.
