Mourning cover from Italian-held LEYKAS/SANTA MAURA Island, Ionian Sea to ATHENS, franked with 50c. ‘King Victor Emmanuel III’ Italian adhesives (1929 regular issue), overprinted ‘ISOLE JONIE’ in red (1941).

Forwarded to Corfu for control (unusual route for correspondence LEYKAS-ATHENS), was opened and examined; secured with ‘VERIFICATO PER CENSURA-CORFU' local resealing tape tied, with oblong same text framed handstamp (without Corfu).
Backstamped with 'ΛΕΥΚΑΣ 18 ΦΕΒ 42' [SANTA MAURA 18 FEB 42] and 'ΚΕΡΚΥΡΑ (ΑΦΙΞΙΣ) 19 ΦΕΒ. 41 [Kerkyra/Corfu (Arrival), 19 Febrary 1942].
No postal or other dated indication of arrival at final destination is shown.
[The Ionian Islands were part of Greece. During WW2, they were occupied in April/May 1941 by Italian troops, who remained in the area until 12 September 1943, when the islands passed under German domination following Italy's armistice of 8 September 1943.]
