12 octagonal stamps issued by Turkey in 1898 after this Greek province’s occupation during the Greco-Turkish war in 1897, featuring the Tughra of Sultan Abdulhamid II over Larissa bridge.
The small selection contains: 3x10pa, 3x20pa, 3x1pi, 2x2pi, 1x5pi, cancelled in April/May 1898 with bilingual datestamps from Domokos (3), Kardhitsa (1), Larissa (1), Aghia (Larissa/Yenidje; 4), Trikhala (1), Volos (2).
[During the Greco-Turkish war (6/18 April - 8/20 May 1897), Ottoman troops occupied Thessaly, Greece. The occupied territories were restituted by the treaty of Constantinople (22.11/4.12.1897) but the Ottoman troops withdrew only in May/June 1898 (7/19 May to 6/18 June).
Ottoman metropolitan stamps were used in the occupied area while special octagonal local ones were issued for use in Thessaly some time before the end of occupation.]
