Undated franchise cover to Athens, Greece from a sublieutenant of cavalry, Liaison officer in the Asia Minor Hellenic Army Headquarters at Kütahya-Eskişehir area (Smyrna and greater area in the country’s Aegean region under Greek administration, 1921-22; the battle of Eskişehir took place on 8 July 1921 with the Turkish troops retreated at the end).
Sender’s details (in Greek) on flap: ‘‘Ανθυπίλαρχος Πέτρος Νικολόπουλος, Στρατηγ. Στρατιάς Μ. Ασίας, Τ.Τ. 940Α” [Postal Sector 940A].
Addressee is Miss Georgia Despotopoulou, rarely seen on cover, known along with her two sisters Nefeli and Ioanna for having kept correspondence with Greek enlisted men in all fronts from 1912 (Balkan Wars) to 1923 (shortly after the expedition to Turkey).
[The large “22” handwritten pencil number on cover indicates addressee’s recorded incoming serial number, placed in arithmetical progression on each new letter received and filed for reference as each letter was always answered later.]
Postmarked for despatch with rarely seen “ΣΤΡ. ΤΑΧ. ΠΑΡΑΡΤ. 3ΟΝ, 8 ΙΟΥΛ. 21” military date-stamp [Army Postal Annex 3, 8 July 1921] in green colour, allotted to the Army HQ.
Backstamped with mc ΑΘΗΝΑΙ 15 ΙΟΥΛ. 21 ΚΕΝΤΡΙΚΟΝ [Athens civil Central PO, 7 September 1921] on arrival at destination.
