Mourning cover affixed 10l (definitive issue) and pair 2X2l Charity Stamps of the National Welfare Committee (Hellas C1), canc. "ΤΡΙΠΟΛΙΣ * 9 ΑΠΡ. 14" pmk. On reverse machine Athens (10.04.1914) pmk.
For 1914 the above Charity Stamps of the National Welfare Committee as additional postage would be compulsory for the Holy Week (31 March) till Easter Friday (11 April). (The 31
March is considered as the first day of use). So 9th April of the above cancellation was Easter Wednesday for the 1914. According the Law 165 of 1914, for the domestic correspondence, the rate of 5 lepta would be applied on letters whilst the 2 lepta would be applied on postal cards etc. The above cover is franked with pair 2X2 lepta Charity Stamps instead for 5 lepta. Perhaps the reason is that due to early use the Tripolis Post Office was not yet supplied with the new 5 lepta Charity Stamps of the National Welfare Committee? (cover from admiral Athanasiou archive). VF and scarce
