German Stammlager (Stalag) VIII B (now Łambinowice, Poland) preprinted POW postcard (German text with printed camp designation) sent by British lance corporal housed in the camp to relatives in Brimington/Chesterfield, England.
His message was written on 24 July 1942, informing the family that he left the hospital, got 3 days’ rest, and then started work on nights; this was not easy but he decided to take everything as it comes, once he was in good health again.
[The prisoner was captured in Greece, during the battles of Crete in May 1941, and he most probably was transferred to Germany with the first British and Commonwealth prisoners in July 1941, via a German transit camp in Thessaloniki, Greece. Though transferred to Germany almost a year before, the German military authorities left him with the capture number given to him on Crete: "5533/KRETA".]
Inspected at the camp; oval censor cachet ‘Stalag VIII B / Geprüft / Nr. 43’ stamped in steel blue. The camp's double ring mute postmark shows ‘01.8.42’ as the date for dispatch.
Forwarded to England via Egypt; examined in London and stamped with “[crown] PASSED /P.W. 6861” censor marking.
Condition: Good, albeit perpendicularly folded; see scans.
