German Stammlager (Stalag) XVIII A prisoner-of-war postcard (German text with printed camp designation) sent to Dulwich Hill NSW, Australia by Australian corporal housed in the camp, located near Priel village south of Wolfsberg/Carinthia in Austria, then a part of Nazi Germany.
[The prisoner was captured on Crete Island in Greece, in May 1941 during the battles of Crete in Greece; he arrived in Germany with the first British and Commonwealth prisoners in July 1941, via a transit camp in Thessaloniki, Greece.]
The message is written on 14.12.1941. It describes sender’s request to know if addressee’s (fellow combatant) son is alright, and the probability the two men may get in touch since they lost contact just after they had arrived in Greece.
Forwarded at the camp; red single ring censor cachet ‘Geprüft / Stalag XVIII A / [censor] 91’ is partially stamped. The camp's mute postmark with "c" in belt’s lower half was applied for dispatch, dated 30.12.41.
Dispatched via Egypt; inspected by the British in Cairo, and stamped with the small DEPUTY CHIEF FIELD CENSOR and reader’s no. “7” markings in violet on reverse.
Examined also on arrival in Australia; Sydney, N.S.W. diamond “2 PASSED BY CENSOR 1414” marking applied on.
Condition: Very fine; see scans.
