French sepia illustrated postcard [‘94 MACEDOINE - Camp de Réfugiés / Camp of refugees’; ed. Panisse et Gallence; printed by Bautinière collotype, Paris]. No sender’s details; believed he was a French soldier, most probably using the card as souvenir of his presence in Edessa area, Greek west Macedonia.
[The ancient Greek city with the name "Edessa", founded in 813 BC, was occupied in the 6th century after a Slav massive assault on the Balkans under the Ottoman occupation, being renamed "Vojenas". Vodená (Βοδενά) was the name used in Greece until 1923, when the ancient name was revived.]
Card bears a French military postal date mark “TRESOR ET POSTES 517 17-12” (GC) [1918], and a Greek civilian one applied two days later, texted “ΕΔΕΣΣΑ 6 ΔΕΚ 18” in Julian calendar (JC) corresponding with 19 December 1918 (GC+13 days).
Last comes soldier’s ms endorsement ‘Vodéna le 4 Janvier 1919 -Vallenti’ on empty text side. [The French postal sector “TRESOR ET POSTES 517” was stationed at Vodena area from June 1918 until 23.08.19).]
