Greek franchise
military postal stationery card printed in blue from a sergeant-major in 4th Infantry Regiment, Archipelago Div. in Salonika Front -NW Monastir (Serbia), to Chios Island in the Aegean. The regiment was under command of the 30th French Division, from 22 July to 18 October 1917. Message in Greek dated ’18 Αυγούστου 1917’ (18.8.1917); ending, the addressee was asked to add ‘Archipelago Division’ in sender’s address from then on.
Forwarded via Thessaloniki and Athens, where it was inspected and stamped respectively and received the Allied “NO” triangular censor marking and then the Hellenic ‘ΚΕΝΤΡΙΚΗ ΣΤΡΑΤΙΩΤΙΚΗ ΛΟΓΟΚΡΙΣΙΑ’ (Central Military Censorship) double-ring cachet with coat of arms in violet.
Postmarked with ‘ΑΘΗΝΑΙ 2.ΣΕΠ.17 ΚΕΝΤΡΙΚON’ (Athens Central PO, 2.9.1917) machine stamp in transit and the ΧΙΟΣ 22.ΣΕΠ.17 [Chios, 22.9.1917] date-stamp upon arrival at final destination.
