1851.09.20, CORFU to Stirling (Scotland): CORFU 20.SET.51 (small circular datestamp) black on entire folded letter rated d"3" & "with d5", written by Lieutenant Colonel Mark Kerr Atherley (Commanding 92nd Foot, The Gordon Highlanders) sent to Bannoekburn near STERLING OC.3.1851 (blue) via MALTA SP.25.1851 and LONDON 2.OC.1851 (red, with crown). Sender's handwritten note "Paid via Marseilles".
The 3 pence rate pays the postage to abroad and the 5 pence pays the maritime rate by British ship to Marseilles (via Malta). To pay tax "1/3" (1 shilling and 3 pence) upon arrival. The blackish red accountancy marking "CR" in italics is not reported in Van der Linden.
